Call for Submissions: EADI Prize for Development Studies 2009

The European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) announces the 2009 prize for excellence in development research. The prize, worth €1 000, will be awarded for an essay on an issue of development studies in any field of the social sciences submitted and written by a postgraduate student from an EADI member country or attending a programme at an institutional member of the Association.

Subjects may be chosen from any field of development studies, but contestants are asked to bear in mind that their work will be subject to scrutiny by one of the EADI Working groups prior being sent on to the jury.

3rd International AMMA Conference - 20-24 July 2009, Ouagadougou - 3ème Conférence Internationale AMMA - 20-24 Juillet 2009, Ouagadougou

 AMMA - African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses - will hold its 3rd International Conference next July.

This conference will be an opportunity to review the progress made in our understanding of the West African monsoon system and to help guide the programme's future.

The Scientific Committee invites researchers working on West African monsoon processes, predictability and climate change issues as well as society-environment-climate interactions to submit abstracts for oral presentations and posters.

Abstracts should be submitted online by 12th March 2009.

AMMA - Analyses Multidisciplinaires de la Mousson Africaine - tiendra sa 3ème Conférence Internationale en juillet prochain.

Cette conférence sera l'occasion pour passer en revue les progrès accomplis dans la compréhension de la mousson ouest africaine dans ses différentes dimensions. Elle permettra également de contribuer aux orientations futures du programme.

Le comité scientifique de la conférence invite les chercheurs travaillant sur les processus, la prévisibilité et les questions de changement climatique liés à la mousson ouest africaine, ainsi que sur les interactions société-environnement-climat à soumettre une proposition de communication orale ou de poster.

Les résumés sont à soumettre en ligne pour le 12 mars 2009.

EU to launch environment project 'auction'

The European Union will offer almost 100 environmental projects from developing countries around the world in an auction to try to attract donors to back them, the European Commission said Tuesday.

The "Auction Floor," to be held in Brussels on March 13, will allow developing projects to meet potential donors such as local authorities, representatives of EU member states and private sector foundations.

In December 2007, the commission launched a call for projects in the area of the environment, sustainable development and natural resources, including energy. It received more than 1,000 proposals worth 1.5 billion euros (1.94 billion dollars).

In the end, around 50 projects were financed for 60 million euros, while almost 100 others were selected for the auction.

Workshop "Young ESD Voices from around the World"

One day before the opening of the World Conference, a workshop with 25 young people from around the world with demonstrated engagement in Education for Sustainable Development will take place in Bonn, Germany. 

Participants of the workshop will also take part in the World Conference. Workshop results will be presented at the Conference.

Young people between 18 and 35 years of age are invited to submit applications for participating in the workshop "Young ESD Voices from around the World" and in the World Conference itself by 9 February 2009.
